Planting The Garden

I’ve shared with you how the garden went last year– not so good. I didn’t have anything come up last year, so I was tempted to not waste my time again. But with the encouragement of some friends and fellow gardeners, I decided to still plant the garden this year. It is so much time and work to plant everything and try to keep it weeded, so to not have anything to harvest after all of that work was very disappointing. But I knew I’d be disappointed if I didn’t do anything. So, back to the drawing board I went….

What can I do to make the garden more successful? Did it fail because of my planting, or timing? Did nothing grow because I couldn’t keep up with the weeds? Was it just too much rain last year? But then how did anyone else around me have any success with their gardens?

So many questions, and I had ZERO answers. The one thing I did know, is that I couldn’t keep up with the amount of weeds I had last year, and I couldn’t let it all take over again because I had nothing to show for it. So I decided I had to find a way to limit the weeds. (I would love to know what solutions you all have to this problem- any safe sprays or methods to stop or minimize the weeds??)

I decided to try garden fabric! I know people that use it for their flower gardens and flower beds, and I thought, “Well, it’s worth a shot!” So I ordered this weed barrier and these staples to hold it in place from Amazon.

We got the rototiller out, laid the weed barrier, and I got to planting! I don’t know if I’ll plant quite as much as I did last year- being pregnant this summer may make it a little harder for me to keep up anyway- but I’m certainly excited try this new method out and hoping for some positive results!

I hope this is helpful if you’ve found yourself in the same disappointing planting situation I have! Here is a new tip to try, and I will certainly report back on how well it works to keep the weeds at bay! So stay tuned 😉

Happy Planting!
