Niagara Falls
I quickly fell in love with the beautiful views of Niagara Falls. I used to have a mindset when I was traveling that I didn’t want to do all the “touristy” things. I’d rather get off the beaten path and find “cool” adventures and views that no one else sees! But the more traveling I’ve done, the more I realize there is a reason everyone is going there! So I’ve started to enjoy the experiences I used to call “tourist traps”.
With that being said, some experiences don’t quite live up to the hype for me. So I’ve put together a list of “Do’s and Don’ts” for your trip to the falls!
What To Do:
When going to Niagara Falls, if you have a passport to get to Canada, definitely view the falls from the Canadian side. But if you can’t go to Canada, don’t worry, my first experience at the falls was on the American side and I fell in love with it!
- The American side has a very informative time line. Even if you don’t like to read a large amount at Museums or historical sights, this is set up in small sections that keep you interested in each step of the time line. I enjoyed reading this prior to viewing the falls and learning about how it has changed over the years and why.
- The American side has a lookout point to see down to the Canadian falls.
- The American’s Maid of the Mist is a MUST! Any time I go to the falls, I will do the Maid of the Mist, over and over again.
If you go to Canada to view the falls, there are many more attractions to see. You can purchase a package deal if you want to visit all of the attractions.
- First we went to the whirlpool and rode the whirlpool aero car. It was fun to ride the care over the river from Canada over to America and back. Here we purchased the package that allowed us to do every attraction at the falls.
- Next we rode the shuttle bus down to the falls and walked from the start of the falls all the way down to the Canadian Falls. It was so beautiful to walk and take all the views in. It was also fascinating to see all of the people and cultures that gather at the falls. There is a very unique and calm view at the end of the Canadian Falls.
- The Hornblower is my absolute favorite! Even though we had done the Maid of The Mist before, we decided to do the Canadian version, The Hornblower. And I will ride it every time I go back! If you can, stand at the front right of the boat on the upper deck. It was one of the most magical things I’ve experienced! It takes you to another world, and you really are in the middle of the falls.
What To Skip:
If you want the best experience without all the added costs, here are a few things you could skip.
- The journey behind the falls really didn’t live up to the hype. This attraction takes you down underneath the falls through a tunnel. There is a landing you can go out on, but I didn’t find it as breathtaking as the views above. There is also an opening in the tunnel where you can get about 10 feet from the falls. This just wasn’t as exciting as I thought it would be, especially for the long line in the tunnel to get your turn at the water. If I went back, I would definitely skip this one.
- Although we did enjoy the Aero Car, the experience on the Hornblower far outweighs this attraction. So if you’re choosing between the different attractions, definitely go with the Hornblower.
One thing I would add in if I go back is to eat at Table Rock House Restaurant and enjoy the view over lunch!
I loved Niagara Falls so much, I went twice in one year! Be sure to leave a comment and tell me your favorite attraction!
Enjoy your journey to the falls!
