Garden Journal 2019
Gardening 101: Gardening tips for beginners from a beginner.
I decided to start a gardening journal to keep track of the dates I plant the garden and to record the growing process. This is my third year having a garden and each year I have tried to grow something fun and unique. I thought it would be fun to share this with you, and if you learn something, GREAT! If you know more than me about gardening (likely) please share your tips too!
2019 is the first year I tilled the garden with a rota-tiller, and for the size of my garden it was amazing! I am so lucky to have a large garden- I have the best Father-in-law that left the edge of one of his corn fields for me to use as a garden, and this year it was about 40 yards. (Maybe too large to keep up with!) And all the rain this year kept me from planting until late May/early June. I hope to plant much earlier next year.
May 27th: Planted Zuccini, squash, tomatoes, onions
June 3rd: Planted more carrots, broccoli, beets, watermelon
June 30th: Planted sweet potatoes
July 7th: Planted chinese pink celery, brussel sprouts, black tomatoes
Aug 24th: Harvested onions. Regardless of how much time I spent weeding this year, the weeds have gotten out of control. I decided to let the weeds go because I couldn’t keep them down. But I managed to clear some to get to these onions to use for a roast!
I didn’t get any pumpkins planted this year, but I hope save some seeds this year and get a nice variety planted next season!
2019 was a disappointing year for my garden. Unfortunately all I harvested were the onions you see in the picture, and a few cherry tomatoes. Honestly, I was very discouraged because I planted more than I ever have, spent more time weeding and tending the garden than past years, and I essentially harvested nothing. It was hard for me to be excited about planning a garden again next year. Have you ever had a year of gardening like this? But then I read a post from Ann, the author of On Sutton Place, and she encouraged me to keep doing it because it’s a hobby that I love. Some years our garden may not yield what we hope for, much like other things in life, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t still continue to enjoy the hobby and learn from the experience. Next year I’ll try some new tactics, and even some new vegetables, hoping for my best garden yet!
