Hillbilly Elegy

By J.D. Vance

I will tell you that there is a lot of language used that I don’t care for, and would not normally recommend a book with this type of language.  But I think it was used appropriately to give the reader an accurate depiction of how the author was raised, and it makes you appreciate even more what he has made of himself.  I found this story hit close to home, and made me think about the communities that are so near to me, but I’m sure there are stories very similar all over the country that anyone can appreciate.

I initially picked this book up because it was the recommended read at my Rotary club.  I heard the author spoke about the communities nearby and I thought it would be interested to be informed of the club read in case I needed to participate in any conversations about it.  I came across the audio version, and I was hooked! (Audio books are often much easier for me to listen to than to actually sit down and put in the time to read a book.) And I’m so glad I discovered this audiobook.  I was so intrigued because the story line of moving from Kentucky up to Ohio made me wonder what it was like for my Great Grandparents when they made a similar move from Kentucky to Ohio for work. It is truly amazing to hear the author’s story and learn about his challenging upbringing, and see what he has made of his life today.

Braving The Wildernes

By Brené Brown

Braving the WIlderness was my favorite audiobook by Brene Brown that I have listened to.  It may have something to do with the fact that I now realize I was walking through the wilderness while I was listening.  I think we all do, and I had never thought of my challenges with the analogy of the wilderness. But it made me identify exactly what I was struggling with and helped me find ways to walk through it.  This audiobook gave me the tools to identify a meeting I recently participated in as “the wilderness” and my role in it; and it helped me learn how to walk through it differently. It gave me a new mindset and the courage to ask God for patience I needed to approach the meeting differently.  The following week I took these tools with me and with God’s grace, the second meeting looked much different, and I am grateful. I will definitely remember this audiobook and read it again in the future!
